Art Therapy Relief for Our Communities

The American Art Therapy Association has launched a new campaign* to help support communities who have been devastated by recent natural disasters including Hurricanes Harvey, Irma, Maria, and the northern California wildfires, and human-caused tragedies, such as the recent shooting of concertgoers in Las Vegas. Ensuring that people's basic needs are met in the moment of and immediate aftermath of such events is crucial. But as time goes by and the mental health impact becomes more clear, so too is it crucial to provide support that addresses the resulting trauma.

This time of community healing and rebuilding is when art therapy can really help.

By mobilizing resources through our local chapters, we hope to fund art therapy-based services and events for children, adults, and communities impacted by these life-changing circumstances. The campaign will continue through the end of November, culminating on this year's Giving Tuesday, the national day of giving, on November 28, 2017.

*At the current time, we regret that we cannot accept donations from individuals residing in GA, MS, UT, or VA. We will update this notice as soon as that status changes. If you live in one of these states, please email us at info@arttherapy.org so that we may reach out to you as soon we can resume charitable donations from these states. Thank you.

WHY ART THERAPY?

If one picture is worth 1,000 words, then a whole gallery of pictures is what's needed to even begin to capture the experience of trauma.

Following Hurricane Katrina, that concept gave voice to children who experienced the storm and felt a complex range of emotions too sophisticated for their developing minds to verbalize. In the wake of a natural disaster, art making can help every family member to literally be 'on the same page' as they remain emotionally united in the wake of the storm's destruction. Art therapy can foster the expression of feelings or thoughts that are difficult to put into words.

In the aftermath of 9/11, images created in response to the event memorialize feelings of loss, anxiety, and depression that many people shared. By working with people directly affected by the event, art therapists provided opportunities to navigate trauma and foster understanding for what people were going through as result of this culture-changing experience. Years after 9/11, images still play an important role in commemorating people's memories by representing growth, resilience, and recovery.

Art therapy proved to be a priceless tool for recovery after Hurricane Katrina, 9/11, and many other disasters the impacted the nation. It can do the same today.
